Woman drowns in Costa del Sol flash floods

A woman has drowned as the popular holiday resort of the Costa del Sol was hit by flash flooding caused by torrential rainfall.

The 26-year-old woman drowned inside a 24-hour strip club in the resort. It is not clear whether the woman was a stripper or worked at the club. Officers say the terrified woman made a call to emergency services when she realised that she was trapped by rising water.

The town of Estepona was worse affected by the freak floods, but the upmarket resort of Marbella, where many millionaires have holiday homes was also impacted, as were Malaga, Mijas and other communities across the area.

Police say that the woman, who was Romanian, was alone in the club when the storms hit. Emergency workers dashed to the scene as soon as they received the desperate call. But by the time they reached her, the water level in the road outside the club had already reached the top of its doors.

A witness at the scene said that rescue workers had tried as hard as they could to reach her, but the could not get her out. In the end, they smashed the doors down of the club in the centre of Estepona and found the woman’s body in the California Club. As a formality, a post mortem examination will be carried out to establish the official cause of death.

The desperate woman is believed to have climbed onto the bar as the water rose in a bid to save herself from drowning. However, the water levels were simply too high. The rains were the heaviest to hit Spain in nearly three decades. A public safety warning has now been issued by officials in Spain. According to police, 600 emergency incidents were reported and 300 rescue workers are working round the clock.
