Prince Harry condemns media treatment of new girlfriend

Britain’s royal family and its media often don’t see eye to eye. And now the two are at loggerheads once again over Prince Harry’s new girlfriend.
The fifth in line to the throne has issued a statement, in a highly unusual move for the Palace, to hit out at the media for intruding upon his new girlfriend’s privacy.
It was revealed just a short time ago that Prince Harry is in a relationship with the American actress Meghan Markle.
The Prince, 32, said the media had stooped to low with articles which had “racial undertones”.
It comes amid a very uneasy relationship between the British royal family and an international media hungry for news about any potential relationship with one of the world’s most eligible bachelors.
Both Prince Harry and his elder brother Prince William have been outspoken about the detrimental impact of the media. They lost their mother Princess Diana in 1997 when she was killed in a car crash while trying to escape paparazzi attention.
Meanwhile, Prince William’s now wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, came under relentless media scrutiny before the pair finally married in 2011. The press dubbed her “Waity Katie” and paparazzi followed her every move.
In a statement issued by Prince Harry’s communications secretary, he said the treatment of Ms Markle was not acceptable.
The statement said: “His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment.
“Some of this has been very public – the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments.
“Some of it has been hidden from the public – the nightly legal battles to keep defamatory stories out of papers; her mother having to struggle past photographers in order to get to her front door; the attempts of reporters and photographers to gain illegal entry to her home and the calls to police that followed; the substantial bribes offered by papers to her ex-boyfriend; the bombardment of nearly every friend, co-worker, and loved one in her life.”
Ms Marklewho is from Los Angeles, was not well known in Britain before news of her relationship with Prince Harry broke.
She is, however, better known in America for playing Rachel Zane in the drama Suits.
While the royal family does not usually comment on speculation surrounding romance, Prince Harry is understood to have felt compelled to act because of the nature of the articles being written about Ms Markle.
