Barbershoppers plan annual Christmas benefit concerts Share
Continuing their tradition of ''giving'' to the community, the Coles County Barbershop Chorus will present their 34th Annual Christmas Benefit Concerts on Sunday, Dec. 6. Wesley United Methodist Church (2206 4th Street, Charleston) will host the 4 p.m. concert, while the First Presbyterian Church (10 Charleston Ave. in Mattoon) will be the site of the 7 p.m. performance. Both churches have adequate parking and are wheel chair accessible. The 30-man chorus and 5 quartets will present this FREE one hour concert that focuses on the true meaning of Christmas. The traditional songs, such as ''Silent Night,'' ''Jesu Bambino,'' ''Angels We Have Heard on High,'' ''Carol of the Bells,'' ''Mary, Did You Know?'' and ''O Holy Night'' will be performed along with some new music. For the first time ever, a harpist will play the prelude and offertory music. Hannah Drake, the harpist and also a talented vocalist, is a sophomore at Charleston High School . A free will offering will be taken and 100% of the proceeds will be disbursed to the area needy (Food and Homeless Shelter Programs in Charleston and Mattoon). Each year, nearly $3,000 is raised at the Christmas Concerts. The generosity of the attendees is very much appreciated, and the need is even greater now than in past years.
