Rotarians learn about Ag in the Classroom, a program benefitting students throughout Clark County
Last Tuesday, Marshall Rotarians were treated to a special presentation by Barb Gard, the Ag Awareness Coordinator for Clark County Farm Bureau. Specifically, her presentation focused on AITC (Ag in the Classroom), a program founded in 1981 that expanded to include Illinois in 2005.
According to a fact sheet distributed by Gard, the Illinois program has proven to be a tremendous success, reaching nearly 500,000 students in grades K-12 in 2008. And while the Clark County program was initially launched in Marshall schools only, it now reaches schools across the county, including the Martinsville and Casey-Westfield districts as well.
Public announcements and upcoming events dominate discussion at City Council
While the agenda itself was a short one, there were plenty of big announcements at the last City Council meeting, much of which focused on upcoming holiday festivities and the long-awaited dedication of the Lincoln statue, which was donated to the community by Jerry and Jean Forsythe.
In addition to the upcoming BINGA event on Saturday, December 5, and Christmas with the Lincolns the previous night, Jeannette Tyhurst (President of Marshall Main Street) also announced that the Lincoln statue, created by renowned local artist Bill Wolfe, would be dedicated in courthouse square at 3:30, prior to the Lincoln dinner at Harlan Hall.
A treasure trove at home for the holidays
Almost every year, my daughter and I fight the madness that is known simply as Black Friday, seeking a few early season bargains on the road to Christmas Day. But while sick people like us do find a warped sense of pleasure in fighting the crowds and standing in eternal lines, what we don't enjoy is going back to the same places throughout the season, hoping to find something different, something better as we round out our Christmas shopping and look for those special stocking stuffers for those special someones.
But this year is going to be different, for now I know that there is life out there, aside from the big department stores and malls in Champaign, Terre Haute and beyond. This year, I have ''discovered'' a veritable treasure trove that lies right here in our own backyard-a treasure trove comprised of more goodies and more local retailers than I even realized existed in our local communities.
