The song remembers when... Hanners blends narratives with folk music

It's storytelling gone melodic. Pulitzer-prize winning journalist, David Hanners, is now writing and performing folk songs about people and events, often drawing from his blue-collar, small-town background, his two marriages, two divorces, politics and his love of history.

Farmers come together to help Schiver family

Over 60 farmers and their helpers turned out last Monday to finish the harvest for the Schiver family following the untimely death of Robert ''Rob'' Schiver. Schiver and Son Farms is a three-generation farming operation that included David Schiver, his sons John and Rob, and John's son, Jesse, along with Larry Smith, who has worked for the Schivers for the past 50 years. The harvesting event was organized by Billy Garver and his son Jason who, with their crop spraying business, have worked closely with the Schivers for over 30 years. The Schivers farm 2,000 plus acres, and according to Billy, Rob was a huge part of their farming operation and will be greatly missed.

Chief presents Neighborhood Watch program to CIA

A Neighborhood Watch program can result in a dramatic decrease in burglary and related offenses. Casey Police Chief Mark Jenkins gave a PowerPoint presentation to Casey in Action on Nov. 19 to explain the function and organization of a watch program. The program's inception was sparked by the 1964 rape and murder of Kitty Genovese in Queens, New York, when 28 witnesses did nothing to assist Genovese or to apprehend her killer. Locals formed groups to watch over neighborhoods and to look out for suspicious activity in their areas. The National Sheriff's Association began a concerted effort in 1972 to revitalize the ''watch group'' effort nationwide, Jenkins explained.
