Warriors Move to 3-0; Defeat Flora 35-6

Share

The Casey-Westfield Warriors continued their dominance of the Little Illini Conference last Friday night by using an accurate passing attack to knock off the previously undefeated Flora Wolves by an impressive 35-6 margin. The much anticipated week three match-up was played on a beautiful September evening that featured an impressive home crowd that included several members of the Casey Class of 1959.

The Warriors struck first in this key league contest, as they received the opening kickoff and marched 62 yards for the game's first points. Tailback Billy Seeley completed the initial drive with a six-yard touchdown run that provided the Purple and Gold with a 6-0 advantage as the game clock neared the halfway point of the opening quarter.

The two LIC schools then battled evenly for the next 17 minutes, until the host school gained momentum entering halftime with their first passing touchdown of the night. With forty-four seconds left before the halftime break, quarterback Brett Livvix connected with fellow senior Seth Brewer on a 38-yard pass that provided the Warriors with additional breathing room as the two clubs headed to their respective locker-rooms. Clinton Scott's extra point gave the Warriors a 13-0 halftime advantage.

Casey-Westfield removed all doubt about the final outcome with two more aerial scores in the third quarter. Livvix teamed up with Brewer once again, this time on a 52-yard scoring pass and then finished an impressive performance with a 19-yard touchdown toss to Scott later in the third period.

Livvix, the senior signal caller, finished the game with 14 completions out of 16 passing attempts for 212 yards and the trio of touchdowns. Brewer was on the receiving end of five passes that accounted for 141 yards. Chris Unzicker caught also caught five passes that netted 28 yards and Scott hauled in a pair of passes that resulted in 31 yards of Warrior offense.

The final Casey-Westfield points of the night came early in the final quarter when four-year starter Dalton Brooke scored his first career touchdown. Scott delivered a strong hit near the Flora end zone that resulted in a Wolve's fumble, and Brooke pounced on the loose football for one of the personal highlights of his outstanding high school career.

Flora, which out-gained the Warriors on the ground by a 174 yard to 95 yard margin, scored their only points in the closing seconds on a one-yard run by Cole Honeyman.

''Brett Livvix had another impressive night throwing the football and managing the offense,'' head coach Keith Sinclair explained. ''Seth Brewer also had another nice game catching and running with the football. We spread the ball around through the air and also got both Unzicker and Scott involved in our passing attack tonight.''

''We would like to be more balanced offensively, but Flora has an impressive defensive unit that limited our ability to run the football more effectively,'' he added. Defensively, we played well with ends Josh Thais and Clinton Scott putting considerable pressure on their quarterback. Overall, we defended well, and a lot of Flora's rushing yardage came on scrambles after we had pressured the quarterback.''

Thais led the Purple and Gold defense with fifteen tackles that included a quarterback sack. Scott was equally impressive from the other defensive end spot, recording nine hits, including the forced fumble that resulted in Brooke's touchdown recovery.

Mitch Markwell contributed a strong defensive game with nine tackles, and Brewer matched his teammate's effort with an additional nine tackles as the Warriors remained undefeated on the 2009 campaign.

''This was an important win against an undefeated team tonight, but we must look ahead to another important contest next week when we travel to Cumberland,'' Sinclair concluded. ''Cumberland is a good team, and we must focus each week on improving and eliminating crucial mistakes and turnovers.''

The Warriors and the Pirates will kick it off on Friday, September 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Cumberland High School football field.
