Financial Issues, Maintenance Concerns & Homecoming Preparations Highlight Another Busy Westfield Board Meeting

Share

The Westfield Village Board of Trustees had another full agenda on Monday night, and a lot was accomplished during the meeting, starting with a discussion of how financial reporting is handled. As the Board reviewed the current financial report, some concerns were raised about the lack of detail in it. In response, therefore, the Board agreed that all future reports should contain somewhat more detail to provide a clearer picture of how and why specific funds are being spent.

In other financial matters, the Board unanimously approved a tax re-appropriation to increase funding for IMRF, Insurance and Social Security, as well as the Resolution for a Clark County Park District/Village of Westfield Ingergovernmental Agreement. This agreement, according to Mayor Mark Davis, resulted in $8500 in funding for parks and recreation, marking a $1000 increase over the $7500 received last year. After some discussion, the Board agreed to allocate the $8500 as follows: $5000 in utilities for the gym and park; $1500 for a new fence for the ball diamond; $1000 for light pole repairs; and $1000 for gym improvements (most notably a second locker room for when Westfield hosts some of the high school girls basketball games this year).

Other significant issues discussed at this meeting revolved around the Superintendent's report and concerns that were raised about various maintenance items in Westfied--concerns that are being addressed, but are hampered by limited resources and funding. Among the concerns noted were the condition of some of the buildings downtown; ditch maintenance/weed-eating; sidewalk maintenance; welcome sign maintenance or replacement; park/gym maintenance; and of course, preparations for next weekend's Homecoming festivities.

Westfield's Homecoming will take place from Friday, August 14 to Sunday, August 16 and will feature a variety of family-friendly events, inclduing a baby contest, the Little Miss Westfield Pageant, Bellegarth Medieval Games, a horse pull, a pedal tractor pull, a car/truck/motorcycle show, games for all ages, homemade food and ice cream, a community church service, and concerts featuring the Blue Suede Crew and The Ball Brothers gospel group.

Lastly of note, Warren Le Fever was also in attendance and talked about the upcoming census during the Public Comments portion of the meeting. Le Fever shared information with the Mayor and others pertaining to the process, emphasizing the importance of a complete count which can have a tremendous impact on the funding our County receives.

A special Invitation to all current and former Westfield residents:

Anyone from Westfield (past or present), who has served or currently serves in our armed forces, is encouraged to notify the Village Office. Westfield would like to honor its brave men and women who fight for their country by adding their names to the military signs in town. Anyone else who knows of Westfield residents currently serving in the military is also encouraged to notify the Village Office or any one of Westfield's legislators.
