C-W School Board hears updates, hires social studies teacher Share
The Casey-Westfield School Board heard updates on summer maintenance and approved milk, bread and fuel bids for the coming school year at Monday night's meeting, the first meeting with new Superintendent of Schools Dee Scott. The board met in the Roosevelt Cafeteria, giving board members an opportunity to view the newly installed wood floor in the gymnasium. Following an executive session, the board approved the employment of Jason Blankenbaker as high school social studies teacher. In other board action, the fuel bid was split this year between Bolin Transport and Effingham Equity, giving Effingham the oil bid and the rest to Bolin Transport. Prairie Farms and Lewis Bakery were the only bidders for milk and bread and both were approved. The board also approved the $17,700 expenditure for the Pathways program which was offset from the original cost of $37,000 by aid received from the state. ''It's a great program for non-traditional students,'' said Superintendent Scott.

Monroe Principal Melissa Meiners reported on maintenance work in her building, noting it was mostly custodial with carpets being cleaned, ceiling tiles replaced and bulletin boards added. Each classroom will have two computers this year and any teacher who would like more than two may put in a request, Meiners said. Packets for registration have been sent out and Open House is scheduled for 6 to 7:30 p.m.Tuesday, August 18 at both Monroe and Roosevelt Schools. In the architect's report, Principal Clyde Frankie reported $26,000 is left in the new school building fund and ''it's down to the wire with little things left.'' ''We should be in good shape,'' he said. Board member Susie Hawkins asked if any money would be withheld from the final payment. Frankie said 10% would be withheld for a punch list on making sure everything is up to code and specifications. Discussion ensued concerning the rooftop coils at Monroe School which have caused problems for many years. ''We think we have it fixed, and then we don't,'' said Scott. ''Tests were done and they determined our water was the problem. The problem is outside of warranty.'' One set has been replaced and the second is on its way. Work will be completed by maintenance staff. Frankie said new lockers are being installed in the new building and a new phone system is being installed. ''If you visit the school, you may see a lot of chaos, but work is progressing efficiently,'' Frankie said. Work is also ongoing on the new track and board members discussed at what point they should look at bids for asphalt. It was decided to wait until fall, weather permitting. New student orientation is scheduled for Monday, August 17 with Open House on Thursday, August 20. Frankie said a student who attends school at Martinsville was possibly interested in participating in C-W's dance team, a non-sanctioned athletic event. ''It feels like it's the right thing to do,'' said board member Tim Blair. An auction will be scheduled some time in September for excess teacher desks, televisions, air conditioners, file cabinets, etc. Superintendent Scott said the parents of an out of district sixth grade student were requesting to pay tuition for the school year while they look for a house in the C-W district. Cost would be $7,345.46. Money would be paid monthly. Board approved. Board member Jerome Williams asked if a cafeteria plan was available to employees and suggested the board look into a health/savings account which rolls over from year to year. Before adjourning and going into an executive session, the board heard a request from band director Brent Ritter who asked for an assistant for the 2009-10 school year. In the past he has relied on volunteers. He was given permission to use this individual on a temporary basis until it can be voted on officially at the next board meeting. The board will meet again at 7 p.m., Monday, August 17, 2009. Sharon Durham is a staff reporter for the Casey Reporter.
