C-W School Board meeting coverage continued

Share

Following a hearing on the amended budget on Monday, June 15, the Casey-Westfield School Board approved the amended budget as well as several other items on the agenda in addition to hiring a Junior High Principal.

Many of the items on the agenda were mere formalities as the board approved the banks for depositories, approved educational services, approved free and reduced lunch policy, approved a student teaching agreement with EIU, and approved a continued interagency agreement with the City of Casey Police Department.

The 2009-10 Parent-Student Handbook, the Junior High Planner and the High School Planner were approved. Superintendent of Schools Bob Ehlke said the Handbook would soon be made available to the public on line.

After discussion, the board also approved insurance bids. Superintendent Ehlke noted an increase in the insurance premium in the building coverage which came about through the construction of the new building.

''It costs more to insure a new building than an old one,'' Ehlke said.

He also pointed out an increase in the experience factor on Workmen's Compensation. The experience factor is based on the number of claims and had risen from .88 to 1.01.

''We had a number of claims this year, but they were little minor things,'' he said.

Board member Jerome Williams was concerned about the experience factor as it will affect the premium for several years in the future.

''Could we get documentation on these claims and perhaps pay the minor ones ourselves so that we don't have that jump?'' he asked.

Ehlke said he would talk to the school's consultant and see if someone could come to a board meeting and discuss it.

''We're still way below what we were paying five years ago,'' Ehlke said, referring to the period before the board had employed the consultant Bushue. ''There were times that no one wanted to give us a bid.''

Board member Dale Huisinga said he understood.

''I ran into that problem at the elevator,'' he said.

Last month the board learned that work on the track was ongoing but had been delayed by weather. Monday night Principal Frankie reported he had received preliminary costs on a 400 meter, eight-lane track. Asphalt costs would be approximately $175,000 with an additional $50-75,000 for a rubber coating.

''This is just a ballpark figure, but it gives us something to work with,'' he said.

Frankie has also talked to Kathy Matthews about signage for the new building. No decision has been made on placement.

Fourteen students will be going to the Forsythe Center in the fall for classes in auto mechanics and drafting.

Frankie said ten students will be going in the morning and four in the afternoon. Activity vans will be used to provide transportation.

Following executive session, co-curricular positions were approved as follows: High School Girls' Softball, Dara Throneburg; Assistant, Heather Black; High School Baseball, Brandon Miller; Assistant, Mike Shackelford; Boys' Tennis, Patty Gower; Junior High and High School Track, Kevin Anderson; Assistants, Kevin Curry, Brad Carrell, Sara Richardson.

The Board will meet again at 7 p.m. July 20, 2009.
