Shriners plan annual Fourth of July celebration Share
''Shriners...Pouring Our Hearts Out for Kids,'' is theme of the annual Clark County Shrine Club's Fourth of July celebration in Casey Fairview Park. Each year, the group organizes a full schedule of food and fun to help raise money for the Shrine Children's Hospital, a unique international health care system of 22 hospitals, dedicated to providing pediatric orthopedic specialty care, innovative research and outstanding teaching programs. Children up to age 18 with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate are eligible for care and receive all services in a family-centered environment at no charge-regardless of financial need. The celebration gets underway on Thursday, July 2 with the People's Choice Baby Sweethearts Contest for 0 to 36 month old girls. This event is limited to the fist 12 applicants. A Little Princess Contest, for three to five-year-old girls, is limited to the first 10 applicants. The Junior Miss and Miss Teen Fourth of July contest starts at 6:30 p.m. in Arts Hall on the Casey-Westfield High School campus. For more information, contact Peggy Washburn, at 217-232-7349. Saturday's fun starts with the annual parade from the United Methodist Church to Casey Fairview Park, starting at 10 a.m. Parade registration is 8 to 9:30 a.m. The annual catfish and chicken fry will be served starting at 11 a.m. in the Lions Club Pavilion. Other Shrine food trailers, located next to the bandstand, will serve soft-serve ice cream, snow-cones, cotton candy, nachos, pretzels, corn dogs, French fries, onion rings, grilled sandwiches, Pepsi products and much more. Shiners are accepting donations for the annual Fourth of July Shrine Auction, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Casey Fairview Park. The highlighted item each year is the Mystery Chest, filled with secret items. The successful bidder gets to keep and display the chest for one year, when it is refilled and resold. Anyone wishing to donate new or slightly used items in good condition, should please contact Benny, Bob or Ron Stutsman at 217-932-2530. The talent show, a local favorite featuring local talent, is set for 5:30 p.m. Friday. Anyone who wishes to enter, should contact Pete Davidson at 217-932-6152. The Rich Anderson Show will highlight Saturday's bandstand musical entertainment. Lloyd Wood has been performing in Indiana and the Tri-State since 1978 and is nationally recognized for his contribution to country music. He is also the recipient of the Sagamore Of The Wabash, the highest honor bestowed by an Indiana Governor. Wood provides family entertainment at all his shows. He has open and shared the stage with many big stars like Marty Robbins, Ronnie Milsap, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Gene Watson, and Willie Nelson. Lloyd does over a hundred voices. Rich Anderson has enjoyed touring with Nashville recording artist David Church at such ventures as the Midwest Country Theater. He was featured on RFDTV, The Kentucky Opry and the Hank Williams in Georgiana, appearing in the same show with Jet Williams, Gene Watson and Mark Chestnut. He has played or performed with such talents as legendary Grand Ole Opry Musician Joe Edwards, internationally known Venture guitarist Nokie Edwards, Tommy Cash and regional artists such as Blair Carman, Steve Jeffers, and Sheila Stevens. Now, Lloyd Wood and Richard Anderson have teamed up and taken their show to Florida, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Everyone is invited to come enjoy the music, the laughter, and the fun that this show will bring to your community. Other events include the following: surrey rides, a horseshoe pitch, antique tractor pull, Casey Fairview Saddle Club Horse Show, llama exhibition, and one of the best fireworks display in the area in the southwest corner of the park. There will also be a flea and craft market area where yard sales can also be set up. A garden tractor pull is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at the park. Anyone who would like to donate to the auction or concert, be in the parade, set up an information, flea or craft market, or yard sale booth (no charge, but freewill donation accepted), or who would like more information about the event, is asked to contact Ron or Rebecca Stutesman at 217-932-2598 or by email at bstute@comwares.net. All events have free admission, but freewill donations are accepted. Marcy Shonk is a staff reporter for the Casey Reporter.
