Lowell Hickox retires from Casey-Westfield High School Share
After 43 years in education, Lowell Hickox is ready to put his school keys down and walk away. One can hardly blame him. If you add in the years he was a student, his years in education come closer to 60. It's time to relax and enjoy the other good things life has to offer. Lowell began his career in Fort Wayne, Ind. where he taught for 11 years before moving back to the area to teach at Westfield until consolidation brought him to Casey-Westfield. During his career, he has taught Drivers' Ed, science, health and physical education. He also served as Dean of Students and most recently, as assistant principal. When asked about highlights of his career, he was quick to respond. ''No two days are the same,'' he said. ''I always looked forward to meeting the challenges of each day, knowing something different was going to happen. That's the joy of education-nothing routine or dull.'' As to what he found most important in his role as an educator, he had another ready answer.

''Trying to be a positive influence,'' he replied. ''Guidance is what it's all about. Trying to steer them in the right direction. Showing them the possibilities that lie within.'' As to the future, he's not going anywhere. His wife, Diane, will teach two more years, and they are moving from the country, into Casey, swapping houses with their son, Joe and his wife, Chris. ''I intend to continue to work out there,'' he said. ''We'll still have ties out there.'' Lowell said he enjoys landscaping, and no doubt his talents will be put to work in the extra spare time he will soon experience. He and Diane also have a home in Florida where they will spend vacation time and possibly future winters after she retires. Lowell leaves his career with a lot of good memories, judging from his closing remark, ''All in all, it's been enjoyable.'' Sharon Durham is a staff writer for the Casey Reporter.
