Phipps takes place in national kiddie tractor pull Share
Auston Phipps, the eight-year-old son of John and Sommer Phipps of St. Francisville, showed his determination and focus during an event that took him all the way to national finals competition. On September 26, the youngster earned seventh place in the Kiddie Tractor Pull in Mitchell, S.D. He made a pull of 31-feet. It was the first year that he had ever attempted competing in a ''Kiddie Tractor Pull.'' According to his mother, however, ''he was pedaling before he was three-years old.'' For Auston, participating in the tractor pull was ''something to do other than ride the rides (at the county fairs).'' His tractor pull victories stacked up as he won his age group divisions in Bible Grove, Ill. Poseyville, Ind., Salem, Ill. and Indianapolis, Ind. His victory at the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis with three full pulls, topping out at 37-feet pulling 700 pounds, qualified him for the ''nationals''in Mitchell, S.D. Competitors from 28 states participated in the event. Once Auston is seated on the tractor, he becomes very focused and ''doesn't look back at the sled.'' His strategy is to put all of his strength into it from the start, wasting no time peddling. Now, with a national medal of recognition, Auston is wondering how much farther he can go. He may be eligible to compete in ''sanctioned'' pulls also.

Looking even further ahead, Auston seems set on his career choice for the future - ''farming, like my dad.'' Auston is a third grade student in Pat Glass's class at Bridgeport Grade School. Barbara E. Allender is editor of the Bridgeport Leader.
