Dawgs shut out Lions

Share

The Red Hill High School varsity football team shut out the visiting Edwards County Lions on Friday, 21-0.

The football was tossed back and forth between the teams in the first quarter, eliminating an opportunity for a touchdown until the final seconds. At that, Jordan Evans' short touchdown run was relinquished as officials called ''holding'' on the Dawgs.

The second quarter started out shaky for the home team as quarterback Eli Latch was sacked by the opponents. Half way through the quarter, however, the game took a turn for the better as Anders Ericksen recovered a fumble. Latch's pass to Tony Theriac was good for a first down, followed by Evans' 17-yard run for a touchdown. With 2:47 remaining in the quarter, the PAT failed and ending the quarter with Red Hill on top, 6-0, at the half.

In the third quarter, Red Hill came out ready to score. Evans pushed through the Lions line one yard for a touchdown as 10:19 clicked by on the clock.

The Salukis soon took possession of the ball again as Conner Reed intercepted an Edwards County pass. Little of the slippery ground was covered though as Red Hill lost the ball to a fumble recovered by the Lions' senior Nick Carie.

The Dawgs' defense kicked in as Dalton James and Tyler Reed teamed up to sack Edwards County senior quarterback Chad Smith. Red Hill got their opportunity to recover a fumble later in the quarter as Tyler Kidwell reclaimed the ball on the 16-yard line.

In the next minute of play, Theriac moved the ball which was bulldogged over the line for a touchdown by Evans. The two-yard push was Evans' third touchdown of the night. Despite slipping on the wet ground, Tim Bergst made the kick good for the extra point.

Neither team scored in the fourth quarter as both teams struggled with illegal procedure and false start calls. Highlights, however, included a defensive block by Albertson and a pass interception by Kidwell.

Red Hill added up 187 net yards rushing, while Edwards County counted in 11.

In the air, Saluki Eli Latch connected 9 of 16 passes, while the Lions made 2 of 9. Red Hill intercepted two of their pass attempts.

Evans traveled 96 yards in 12 attempts to lead the Salukis.

Tony Theriac was the team's leading receiver, connecting with four passes for 49 yards.

Albertson led the team with three punts for 108 yards.

Defensively, Ericksen made six solo attacks.

The Red Hill varsity will be in action again on their home turf as they host Leroy on Saturday at 1 p.m.
