Toyota puts employees to work on community projects Share
A Princeton, Ind. business that employs local residents is making use of their time and skills for community projects. Since the slowed economy left about 130 Toyota Logistics employees without work to do, they have been working on company time for communities throughout the area since October. From construction to painting and landscaping, crews of up to 75 associates a day may be on the site of any single project. Where funding has been unavailable for non-profit groups, schools or other entities to pay for labor, this work is being accomplished through the generosity of the Toyota company. The work has taken crews to such places as Mesker Zoo in Evansville, Ind., West Boggs Lake near Loogootee, Ind., and schools in Oakland City and Princeton, Ind., and Allendale, Ill. Most recently, Jeff Fiscus of Lawrenceville consulted his supervisor at Toyota Logistics about the need for telephone wiring to be run at Parkview Jr. High School in Lawrenceville. The labor which was estimated at $7,000 is being provided at no cost to the Unit 20 school district. At least two people a day have been working at the school since Monday, July 27. They expected to complete the job of running 12,000 - 16,000-feet of wire within the week. It is unknown how long the projects will continue through the Toyota community program.
