Summer work nears completion in school buildings Share
The Red Hill Unit 10 school board will soon give their final approval of summer work being performed on the district buildings. During the board meeting on Thursday, July 16, the board set walk-throughs for inspections of the buildings on August 3 and 10. Maintenance Supervisor Tim Emmons reported to the board on three major projects that have been top priorities for the district. - Due to recent rainfall, work on the ditch between Bridgeport Grade School and the district office has been unable to be done. - work on the return heating system lines at the Sumner Attendance Center is underway. Work will begin in the classrooms and hallways in order that it will be completed prior to the beginning of school. - Repairs and replacement of air-conditioning units at the south end of Bridgeport Grade School and for the band room at Red Hill High School will be ordered and installed. The estimated bid is $38,000 from J.E. Shekyll.

SAC/Petty Principal Clarence Gross Jr. said that the preliminary results of the PSAE tests had been received. He noted that reading scores had improved by 8.2 percent and math scores declined by 1.8 percent. It is the second consecutive year that the school has not met Annual Yearly Progress levels, as required by the No Child Left Behind governmental objectives. Since the AYP levels are not up to par, the school will be receiving additional funds to help with making improvements. ''We're making a lot of progress here, but we got a long way to go,'' Superintendent Matt Seaton said. Seaton said that the state budget had passed. At the beginning of the month, the district received $200,000. However, Seaton said that $253,000 owed since last year may not get to the district until November. The board approved bids on various supplies for the upcoming school year. Food products will be provided through Wabash Food Services, Bears Distributing and CRS One-Source. Prairie Farms will provide milk products, while bread items will be provided through Interstate Brands. Wabash Valley Service won the LP gas bid at $1.07 per gallon. The fees will remain the same as last year for food and school admission costs. The first day of school for students will be August 19. Registration is August 5 and 6. In other business, the board: - voted for the non-release of closed session minutes to the public for the January 2008-December 2009 meetings. - accepted the resignation of Jennifer Shappard as RHHS Study Hall Supervisor. - employed Stacy Stout as a Petty first grade teacher, Amy Ochs, BGS first grade teacher; Katy Steber, BGS third grade teacher; Bonnie Griggs, sixth grade teacher; Jessica Huber, Title I teacher; Elizabeth Cogdill, RHHS librarian; Cindy Bridwell, RHHS assistant cook; Eric Andrews, bus mechanic. assistant to transportation director; Russell Adams, SAC girls basketball coach; Eric Adamson, SAC assistant boys basketball coach, and Audra Wiley, RHHS assistant volleyball coach.
