Casey rains chaos on Rippers

The 14U Lawrence County Rippers softball team finished second in the Summer Fun Tournament in Jasper County, July 10-12.


Teams participating in the tourney included: the Centralia Supersonics, Charleston Chill, Cumberland Invasion, Moultrie County Rush Silver, Casey Chaos, Jasper County Orange Crush, Midwest Magic, Charley's Angels and Altamont Bandits.


The Rippers went undefeated throughout the weekend, advancing into the championship game on Sunday.


After an energy-draining break in game play, the Rippers lost their first championship playoff game to Casey Chaos, 10-0. Casey had lost to the Rippers in a prior playoff game and brought back vengeance by scoring three in the first inning, two in the second and five in the third.


In the second championship game, Casey defeated Lawrence County, 6-4.

The Rippers were steady with one run in both the second and third innings. They added two runs in the fifth inning. Casey scored three in the third and fifth innings.


Duncan hit a triple, while Taylor Paulin had two doubles, Moan and Heidi Litherland, one apiece, and Carr, two singles.


Carr pitched, allowing five hits, striking out two and walking one.


On Friday, July 10 in Newton, the Rippers defeated Charleston Chill, 5-1.


Kelsi Perrott hit a home run and a triple for the Rippers.


Cannon Keepes hit a triple and a double.


Mykalya Duncan and Taylor Paulin each hit doubles, while Ashlyn Carr had a hit.


From the pitcher's mound, Carr struck out three, allowed four walks and three hits.


In the second game, the Rippers defeated Altamont, 2-1, in an overtime tiebreaker.


At bat, Dakotah Moan had a home run.


Keepes hit a triple, while Carr had two hits and Duncan, a double.


Keepes pitched 4.5 innings, striking out four, allowing three hits and walking three.


Carr pitched 2.5 innings, allowing one hit and striking out three.


On Sunday, July 12, the Rippers met Midwest Magic with a 7-5 victory slam.


Midwest scored five in the second inning, but was matched by the Rippers with five runs in the fourth inning. Lawrence County came back with two runs in the fifth inning.


At bat, Carr hit a triple, while Perrott had two doubles, and Keepes, Tori Paulin and Duncan each had one double. Duncan also hit two singles.


From the pitcher's mound, Keepers pitched half of an inning, allowing two hits and walking three. Carr pitched 4 1/2 innings, allowing one hit, striking out two and walking two.
