Summerfest is success second-time around

Share

Inclimate weather held off just enough for a crowd to hold on to plans for a fun weekend in Bridgeport's Lanterman Park. The rescheduled Bridgeport Summerfest proved to be successful with a Friday night crowd and steady attendance for Saturday activities.

On Friday, a record-breaking number of babies entered the baby contest. The individual categories were divided to make room for the difficult task of judging on the festively decorated outdoor Summerfest stage.

''Terry Lee and the Rockaboogie Band'' entertained listeners, as well as dancers who scuffed across the park lawn to the classic familiar tunes.

The event officially opened following a Saturday morning parade through sprinkles of rain. Members of the Lawrenceville VFW Post raised the flag while a recording of the National Anthem played and a welcome was extended to the crowd by Mayor Max Schauf.

Attracting a crowd of all ages, flea market tables were set up, alongside inflatable bouncers for children.

One of the highlights of the event was the selection of the Little Mr. and Miss Summerfest on Saturday afternoon.

Six and a half year-old Hannah Mickiewicz, the daughter of Shannon Jones and Walter Mickiewicz, will reign as the 2009 Little Miss Summerfest. Haylie James was the first runner-up, while Joslyn Sanderson, age 4, was the second runner-up. Derron Fisher, the four-year old son of Tara Adamson and Levi Fisher, will be the reigning Little Mr. Summerfest.

The aroma of local church groups preparing BBQ on site for a cook-off filled the air on Saturday. The Bridgeport Wesleyan Church claimed the ''Best Overall BBQ'' with a traveling trophy to be awarded annually. Bridgeport Wesleyan also got the ''Best Booth Setup'' award and the first place Pork BBQ award. Other winners were proclaimed as New Hope Christian Church for their first place Chicken BBQ, the Free Methodist Church for their second place Pork BBQ and the Assembly of God for their second place Chicken BBQ.

Some hefty competition was also in the horseshoe pitching pits as Don Shepard of Allendale and Carroll Fritts teamed up for first place. John Cooper and Harold Rose placed second, while Stewart Murray and Tony Wirth placed third.

A large number of dogs, especially of the Dachshund breed, participated in the Pet Show on Saturday. Tina Canady's ''Comet'' was awarded the ''Best of Show.'' The second place trophy went to ''Princess,'' shown by Steve Martin. Special trophies awarded ''Bear,'' owned by Angel Meek for the ''Least Hair,'' as well as ''Best Behaved.'' The first place dog was ''Demon,'' owned by Jerry Stevenson.

Throughout Saturday, the rock climbing wall was a popular attraction for adventure seekers. The day was capped off with the sounds of ''Trouble & Company,'' comprised of the talented vocalists, Joe Nave, Laif Burns and Chris Perry. A talent show concluded the event.
