Bridgeport City Council Reviews Grants In Special Meeting

Bridgeport City Council Reviews Grants in Special Meeting

In a Thursday, February 9, special city council meeting, the first part of the agenda involved a presentation by Kara Kuykendall of the Greater Wabash Regional Planning Commission, who spoke to council members and residents, giving them input regarding the possibility of the city submitting two grants - one for $327,495 for a replacement sanitary sewer lift station, as the one in current use is failing. Also included in the final total would be monies for a 10-inch force main, plugging the existing line, an interconnect line, a 24-inch sanitary sewer line, earth fill above the high water elevation level, an electric generator, electrical service, Marathon Pipe Protection, seeding and cleanup, replacing rails on the existing pumps, and a flow meter and telemetry. The grant would be a matching funds grant with the city being responsible for $110,985.

Next up was information from Kuykendall on a housing grant application. This grant would allow for approximately $145,000, with a $20,400 in leverage in Rural Development funding, to be received at no cost to the city or homeowner. The monies would be used to repair housing in target areas in the Roosevelt, Lexington, and Gillespie areas on the east side of town. Those interested in obtaining such repairs would need to apply. There is a $40,000 limit per application, so the monies available would most probably cover five-to six-homes. It is possible that after these housing monies are used, the city could apply for an additional grant to cover other areas in town that need repair. The grants are restricted to housing areas that are of low-to-moderate income levels.

After the presentation, the meeting was formerly called to order with City Council members Ldora Laughlin, Ed Standley, T.J. McClellan, Kay Mossberger and Darlene Arnold voting to support and move forward with the projects, submit the applications and commit the funding that was required of the city. Mayor Max Schauf and council member Michael Crask were both absent from the meeting, due to illnesses.

The next regularly scheduled Bridgeport City Council meeting is Tuesday, February 14, at 7 p.m.
