OCC Announces Academic Challenge Contest Winners

Students from 14 area high schools participated in the 32nd annual Academic Challenge contest at Olney Central College. The statewide event is sponsored by the University of Illinois.

Division 300 schools competing this year were: Edwards County, Palestine, Oblong, Clay City, Hutsonville, North Clay, Red Hill and West Richland.

Division 700 schools included: Robinson, Newton Community, Mt. Carmel, East Richland, Flora and Lawrenceville.

Trophies were awarded to the three teams with the highest scores in each division. Palestine was the first-place winner in Division 300. Edwards County placed second and Oblong finished third. All three teams will advance to the next level.

East Richland won in Division 700, with Robinson and Newton Community finishing second and third, respectively. East Richland and Robinson will advance to the next level of competition.

Individual awards also were presented in each division. The award categories were biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, math and physics.

The individual winners were:

Division 300

-Biology: First - Caroline Wanza of Oblong; second - Tyler Hawkey of North Clay; and tied for third - Jillian Abendroth of Edwards County, Mark Byers of North Clay, Katie Liberman of Red Hill, and Brennen Wells of Clay City.

-Chemistry: First - Jace Biggs - Palestine; second - Robert Michael Clark of Edwards County; and third - Andie Scherer of Red Hill.

-Computer Science: Tied for first - Katelyn Fryman of Edwards County, and Mason Wells of Hutsonville; tied for second - Jordan Atwood and Matthew Dasch both of West Richland, Joel Greenwood and Lukas Jones both of Oblong, and Dallas Kirk and Evan Potts both of Palestine; and third - Kayleigh Berger of Edwards County.

-Engineering Graphics: First - Ellie Nead of Edwards County; second - Kyle Myers of Palestine; and tied for third - Robert Michael Clark of Edwards County and Tanner Inboden of Oblong.

-English: First - Karlin Compton of Edwards County; tied for second - Kristin Cline of West Richland and Clinton Rauch of Clay City; and third - Shelby Burroughs of North Clay.

-Math: First - Jace Biggs of Palestine; second - Gary Newell of Red Hill; and third - Sam Turpin of Edwards County.

-Physics: First - Ryan Wells of Hutsonville; second - Dylan Webster of Hutsonville; and third - Marcus Wood of Edwards County

Division 700

-Biology: First - Emily Steward of Newton Community; second - Jordan Hahn of East Richland; and tied for third - Cody Holmes of East Richland and Jordyn Huston of Newton Community

-Chemistry: First - Nick Iovanac of Robinson; second - Ben Loeb of Lawrenceville; and tied for third - Allie Oxford and Faith Williams both of Robinson

-Computer Science: First - Eric Kline of Flora; second - Logan Cummins of Lawrenceville; and third - Kevin Weaver of Lawrenceville.

-Engineering Graphics: First - Logan Cummins of Lawrenceville; tied for second - Emily Hustad and Austin Zwilling both of East Richland; and tied for third - Miranda Jennings of Flora and Mitchell Kocher of East Richland.

-English: First - Cale Stallard of East Richland; second - Kimbra Shaner of Robinson; and tied for third - Lizabeth Engelmeier of Flora, April Webb of Newton Community, and Victoria Youngs of Mt. Carmel.

-Math: First - Jordyn Huston of Newton Community; second - Cale Stallard of East Richland; and tied for third - Karina Adams and Jonathan Titsworth of Robinson.

-Physics: First - Ridge Finn of Newton Community; tied for second - Ben Loeb of Lawrenceville, Jacob Myer of Mt. Carmel, Nikki Schackmann of Newton Community, and Faith Williams of Robinson; and third - Jonathan Titsworth of Robinson.

The first-, second- and third-place finishers received medallions presented by OCC Foundation President Deborah Mitchell and OCC President Rodney Ranes. Olney Central College Presidential Scholarships were awarded in Divisions 300 and 700 to the top two finishers in each area of competition.

The first- and second-place finishers all advanced to the next level of competition as individuals if their team isn't advancing.

Co-ordinators for the event included OCC instructors Lisa Benson, Rob Mason and Laurel Cutright.
