The Way It Was

Reflections on the Way It Was in Bridgeport in years gone by.

Two vehicles were involved in a Friday afternoon accident on the Bridgeport Blacktop, south of town. No injuries were reported. Abby M. Gillespie, 16, St. Francisville, was driving a 1992 Saturn south on County Road 800E when she came upon a tractor and equipment and attempted to pass, pulling into the path of a 1998 Dodge, driven by James DePina, 57, of Bridgeport. Both vehicles ran off the road, causing the tractor and equipment to overturn. Gillespie was issued a written warning.

Automotive Technology Systems, formerly Trim Masters, Inc., Lawrenceville, made a total of $10,500 in contributions divided between three different organizations - Red Hill Unit #10, Lawrence Unit #20 School District, and Lawrence County Memorial Hospital.

Unit #10 Schools were attacked by a flu bug, with 256 students absent on one day alone.

W.C. Siddens received the Wildlife Management Award from the Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District.

Josh Stockinger left the "Leader" to go to college and seek a degree in journalism. Diana Eldridge was taking Josh's place as a staff writer. Ann Polk was contributing stories and editor Sharon Crites was taking a leave of absence.

Inez Fisher reported on the "News of Sumner;" George Ann Watson brought us news of "The Roving Reporter;" Margaret Thacker filled us in on the "Chauncey Landes News;" and Sharon D. Crites offered "Write to the Point!" The late Perry Piper's column '"Growing Up on Muddy Creek" brought remembrances of airplanes from days gone by.

Local youth Jennifer Herring got a look at Disney World from behind the scenes. An article, written by Janice Bellinger, told of Jennifer's months working at Epcot Center in Florida after attending the Disney World College program. Her roommates were from China, France, and Canada. Jennifer stated the park was supposed to hold 65,000 people, but there were more than 100,000 people there that day.

Residents were posed to vote on an Enhanced 911 emergency system referendum.

Michelle Lynn Houston of LHS and Matt McCullough of RHHS received Good Citizen Awards from DAR.

McCoy's IGA had Kraft Parkway margarine quarters for 59 cents, as well as mixed fryer parts for 39 cents per pound, and IGA canned vegetables - three cans for 99 cents.

Parkview Junior High inducted 27 seventh and eighth graders into the National Junior High Society.

Lions President, the Rev. Bill Watson, inducted his son, Kevin Watson, into the organization,

The Red Hill seventh grade Miss Salukis beat Carmi 37 - 30, to win the North Egypt Conference seventh grade tournament.
