Junior Police Academy To Begin

Junior Police Academy to Begin

The Oblong Police Department will begin a new program with Oblong Grade School students on February 9.

Students in grades five through eight will participate in the program called Junior Police Academy.

Chief Pusey believes the more time spent with school children the better off they may be - in helping them stay away from trouble. The program will highlight the areas of drug abuse, bullying, crime prevention, and character counts. Not only will the children be taught these critical issues, they will see demonstrations from all areas of law enforcement including SWAT Teams, FBI, DEA, State Police and other areas associated with police.

The Junior Police Academy will run for approximately eight weeks. It will be held for two hours, one night a week. The police department has obtained permission from Oblong Unit 4 School to use the school for this program. Each week, there will be a different lesson focusing on some area of law enforcement. There is no fee for children wishing to participate.

The police department is seeking funds and has received funding for this program.

"I do not want a child to have to pay for such an important program where they can interact with the police and friends in a positive way," said Chief Pusey. Each child enrolled will receive a t-shirt and several other items throughout the program they will keep. At the end of the program, each child who completes the Junior Police Academy will receive a certificate of completion.

"My goal at the end of the program is to have a party for the kids to congratulate them on this accomplishment and to recognize them among their friends and family," Chief Pusey added.

There are currently 35 students registered for the new program. For additional information about the Junior Police Academy, please call Chief Pusey at 618-592-4715. Anyone interested in donating funds for the program, also contact Chief Pusey.
